Walt Whitman
Poet of the Open Road
“I have one big idea and limited savings. Play it safe or bet on it?”
Camerado, I put my hand on your shoulder and say this: I set the first Leaves of Grass in type myself, sold barely a copy, and the country has been absorbing it ever since. Safe is a parlor with the blinds drawn on a June morning. Do you think the grass asks permission to sprout?
Every atom belonging to you as good belongs to the thing you are building. Spend the money, spend the sweat, contradict yourself if you must. The open road will not bankrupt you. Only the door you never walked through can do that.
