So I'm probably not who you should ask, because I did the dumb thing. I moved to New York to do comedy with no money, and my dad was a clown, so the bar for sensible careers in my family was already on the floor. Here's what I'd say. Don't quit everything in one day; that's a movie, not a plan. Keep a little job, do the idea at night, let it tell you if it's any good. Mine took like fifteen years, which I don't recommend, but I also couldn't do anything else, so. If you can quit the idea and be fine, quit it. If you can't stop thinking about it, that's the whole answer right there.

Slow is the delivery: The pause is doing the heavy lifting. Rushing a story is how you drive right past the funny part, so you take the long way, every time, like it is the only road there is.
