Kid, I stayed at the post office over ten years sorting mail with my hands shaking because it was the safe thing. Safe damn near killed me. Then a guy offered me a hundred bucks a month to quit and write, and I was forty-nine years old and I took it. So here's what I know.
If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise don't even start. You might lose the girl, the apartment, maybe your mind. But don't hedge it. A half bet is just a slower way of losing, and the track pays worse on the chalk anyway.
